Portraits of Yesteryear: Trick or Treat

With Halloween lurking right around the corner, I thought it appropriate to make this week’s Portraits of Yesteryear absolutely frightening. Or at the very least, embarrassing.

The Husband and I used to get creative with our costumes. This was before we had children. Now our creative ability has somehow died and channeled itself into store bought costumes . . . for the kids. Surely not for us. There just hasn’t been a reason to get dressed up. No parties. No contests. Now it’s purely about the kids. And I’m too lazy to be saddened by it.

But oh we had some glory years indeed. Let’s see. One year we took home the prize for best costume. We dressed up as ketchup and mustard. Now that I think about it I don’t know why we won. Maybe it had something to do with the Husband campaigning by handing out mustard packets every time he tipped his pointy mustard hat down. I’ve never been so proud. Too bad I don’t have a picture.

Then there was the Halloween of the Dave and Wendy costume. We made a great father daughter duo. And we looked absolutely dumb doing it. This was when we were dating and looked like kids. Somehow that makes it even more grand.
We stopped by one of our fine fast food establishments just to make sure everything was on the up and up. I’m not even sure the employees realized they were in the presence of greatness; otherwise they would have comped our meal, and asked to have their picture taken with us. To our dismay, neither happened. But we played the part tirelessly, and picked up after the patrons. Some people are just so messy with those famous square hamburgers of ours. Animals I tell you.

Then that same year we attended a murder mystery party, posing as a married couple (even though we weren’t) in the 50’s? Completely scandalous I know. We were so in character the entire time. The Husband (then Boyfriend) was a retired colonel if I recall correctly, and I was the crotchety old wife who despised him and my life in general. We were not the murderers in case you were wondering.

And now that I’ve shared some not so flattering pictures of me and the Husband, I’m going to go eat a bag of Kit Kats while you tell me about some of your own Halloween costumes of the past.

P.S. I was going to write a post about how it hasn’t snowed yet, even after I made a big deal about the weather forecast in my last post. But just as I had the thought, I looked out the window and guess what was falling out of the freaking sky? That’s right. Superman, covered in flakes.

So fun! We only started really dressing up about 3 years ago, after my friend got married, and they started throwing a Halloween party. But now I love it.

Yeah looking at these pictures is sort of getting me in the mood . . . to dress up . . . for Halloween.

Very cute and creative. I'm always amazed at how creative people can get with their cosutmes. I have no imagination for these things. I think buying the jack-o-lantern tshirt is costume brilliance!

Atomic Mom-Yes,I'm starting to see the brillance in keeping it simple.

The Wendy costumes are great! How did you even come up with that?
I have 0 creativity.

And I like the picture of your husband as the co lo nel (I feel like an old southern lady when I say it like that)

My husband and I were "phillip, the hyper-hypo" and "Grace" the first year we were married. Then 2 years ago we were Edward and Bella. My poor husband wore white make-up and sparkles! Good Times, Good Times...

Love the hyper-hypo idea! Man!
